Project Overview

A recent scheme to replace ageing fluorescent platform lighting with the highly efficient and robust, Thorlux Tuscan LED luminaires.

Delivering this scheme to a challenging environment such as this fully operational railway station required meticulous planning, close collaboration with station staff and agile working patterns to minimise disruption and ensure the safety of both the public and employees.

The new luminaires are each fitted with integral, intelligent DALI dimming and a microwave presence/ambient-light sensor.

The system constantly adjusts illumination to ideal levels, ensuring passengers can move around the station safely while maximising energy efficiency.

Operational Benefits

Feature Fluorescent System Thorlux Tuscan LED System
Energy consumption Constant full power Dims or switches off when unneeded
Control granularity Circuit-wide on/off Individual fitting adjustment
Maintenance intervals Short lamp life, frequent relamping 50,000+ hours, minimal upkeep
User safety Uniform but inflexible light Instant on/adjustment for occupied zones

How It Works

  • Each fitting’s sensor wakes the LED when someone enters its detection zone.
  • Ambient-light reading ensures no over-lighting if daylight suffices.
  • As people move, adjacent fittings gradually increase to maintain consistent brightness.
  • When zones become vacant or daylight is ample, fittings dim or turn off independently.
